COMMUNITY MEMBERS COME TOGETHER
TO REDUCE THEIR ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT AND CARBON FOOTPRINT
WASTE REDUCTION WORKSHOPS PLANNED FOR LOW INCOME,
MULTI-FAMILY RESIDENCES
Community residents at Rippling River apartments in Carmel Valley are doing their part to combat climate change through an innovative waste reduction program. Residents at Rippling River will be participating in two free workshops on February 10th and 17th, 2009 from 11am-12pm, where they will learn how to save money and the environment by adopting the three R’s; Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, and by composting food and yard waste at home.
“Many people don’t realize that recycling your cans and bottles and composting food scraps and yard waste can not only reduce their monthly garbage bill, but can significantly reduce their carbon footprint at the same time. Composting reduces the number of trucks needed to haul this waste to the landfill, which in turn reduces the amount of carbon being released into the atmosphere,” states Mandy Caruso Brooks, Program Specialist at Ecology Action. “Reducing the amount of items you purchase, using reusable containers and bags, and recycling as much as possible can have similar money saving and carbon reducing effects.”
Rippling River residents have been actively participating in a new waste reduction program funded by the California Department of Conservation since November 2008. This 78 unit complex worked with the Monterey Bay Area Regional Multifamily Recycling Project to implement a comprehensive recycling program for all residents and is poised to take their waste reduction even further by educating residents on how to reduce their waste by incorporating reusing, recycling, and composting habits into their everyday lives.
The waste reduction workshops will be held for residents on Tuesday, Feb 10, 2009 and Tuesday, Feb 17, 2009 from 11am-12pm at Rippling River, 53 E Carmel Valley Rd, Carmel Valley, CA 93924.
The Monterey Bay Area Regional Multifamily Recycling Project is implementing convenient and comprehensive recycling programs at one hundred low-income housing complexes throughout Monterey and Santa Cruz Counties. This program aims to reduce waste by approximately 600 tons over the two and half year project term.
Monterey Bay Area Regional Multifamily Recycling Project program partners include Ecology Action, the Salinas Valley Solid Waste Authority, Monterey County Environmental Health Division- Recycling Services, Santa Cruz County Public Works Department, Monterey Regional Waste Management District, the City of Monterey Public Works Department, the Housing Authorities of Monterey and Santa Cruz Counties, BFI Waste Services of Salinas, Green Waste Recovery, Waste Management Inc., Monterey City Disposal, and Tri-Cities Disposal.
