Bike Smart! is a program
of Ecology Action,
a local non-profit dedicated to promoting and providing
sustainable transportation services to Santa Cruz County
residents and businesses. Its
other programs include: Bike
to Work / School,
Folding Bikes in Buses, Zero Interest Bike Loan and Discount Bus Pass. To learn more, click here.
Program Goals!
- Reduce the
collision rates of young bicyclists
- Increase safe, legal
bicycling practices among youth
- Increase use and proper
fit of bicycle helmets
- Advocate and empower
youth to use bicycles for transportation
- Promote exercise and
healthy life-styles through bicycling
- Educate youth to Share the Road as bicyclists and as future motorists
- Inform participants of
local bicycling resources: bicycle routes,
organizations and events
- Generate interest in safe, recreational bicycling

Bicycle Safety Partners
Bike Smart!
partners with many different community organizations
and volunteers to teach bicycle safety, including:
the Santa Cruz County Cycling Club – Youth Education Team, Santa Cruz County Health
Services Agency – Health
Education Unit, Bike to Work/School and local police and sheriff departments.

Staff
Bike Smart! is managed by Saskia Lucas, who runs the program with the help of assistant staff, a dedicated group of volunteers, as well as, student Interns.
Saskia is a credentialed
teacher who has been riding a bicycle for transportation
and recreation ever since she learned to ride when she was 5
years old. She is a League of American Bicyclists Certified Instructor (LCI #1378) and has
been teaching youth about bicycling since 2001, first through a summer bike camp she designed
and ran, and most recently through her bicycle
education work with Bike Smart! Saskia is grateful for the opportunity
to combine her love of bicycling and teaching to advocate
skillful bicycling to future generations. In addition,
Saskia
teaches bicycle safety to adults, including: Bike Traffic School, parents groups and college students.
