SAFE ROUTES TO SCHOOL PROGRAMS THROUGHOUT SANTA CRUZ COUNTY

Santa Cruz County Health Services Agency -  www.santacruzhealth.org

  • Community Traffic Safety Coalition (CTSC) at www.sctrafficsafety.org is a community-based coalition focusing on reducing traffic-related injuries and promoting alternative transportation. Sister agency, Watsonville Bicycle and Pedestrian Task Force (WBPTF) focuses on South County. Services include bilingual bike and pedestrian safety education booths.

  • Ride n’ Stride Bicycle and Pedestrian Safety Program offers bilingual bicycle and pedestrian safety presentations and educational booths for preschool and elementary school students.

  • Bicycle Safety Education Project offers bicycle safety services including bicycle helmet inspections, fittings and distribution, and middle and high school bicycle safety classroom presentations and community presentations.

Jóvenes SANOS (Healthy Youth) - www.unitedwaysc.org

Jóvenes SANOS is a Watsonville-based leadership and advocacy program for high school-aged youth.  The program raises community awareness about childhood obesity and diabetes and advocates for policies that promote healthy nutrition, physical activity, and overall wellness among youth in Watsonville. 

Jóvenes SANOS youth work with the Pajaro Valley Unified School District schools to increase availability of affordable, healthy food options and increase opportunities for regular physical activity.  Work is also focused in local Watsonville markets to increase the purchase of affordable, healthy foods that are sold near schools and parks.  And lastly, youth work with local community agencies to promote and increase opportunities for youth to engage in healthy eating, safe bicycle riding and walking, and physical activity.

Project Bike Trip - www.projectbiketrip.org

Bike Shop at School (BSS) is a high school Career Technical Education class administered by the Regional Occupational Program (ROP). This course introduces students to professional bicycle assembly and repair, while providing an overview of career opportunities within the bicycle industry, from shop mechanic to sales, marketing, and engineering. Curriculum includes: comprehensive bicycle assembly and repair, sales and service, communication, safety laws and health, environmental and economic benefits of cycling, guest speakers and internship opportunities. Two semester class open to 10th, 11th & 12th grade students.

Bike Club at School  (BCS) after-school program introduces middle school students to the many possibilities bikes and cycling offer to enrich their lives. Through a series of lectures, discussion, guest speakers and field trips, Bike Club at School offers a fun and engaging survey of the history of the bicycle, bikes in popular culture, bike usage in countries around the world, and the positive impact of bikes on health, community and the environment. Students also learn bicycle safety and receive mechanical training to perform basic bicycle maintenance.

Greenways to School is a program now at Santa Cruz High designed to help students make connections between personal transportation choices and climate change, oil use, and the health of their planet and themselves.
